Request for Federal Rescheduling of Cannabis to Schedule III

Dear Mr. President,

We are writing to respectfully urge your administration to finalize the rescheduling of marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III.

Rescheduling Cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III

Reclassification of marijuana represents an acknowledgement of the medical benefits of marijuana. Physicians, patients, and the broader healthcare community are eager for transformative action and greater alignment between federal policy and the realities of modern medical practice. Millions of Americans rely on medical marijuana as an alternative therapy for a variety of medical conditions including chronic and terminal illnesses.

Rescheduling marijuana would have several critical benefits for the medical community:

  • Remove barriers to studying marijuana, enabling the development of new therapies and a deeper understanding of its medical potential.1
  • Reduce stigma associated with marijuana, leading to more open dialogue between physicians and patients.2 
  • Support physicians and healthcare providers with clearer guidelines and more robust data on marijuana-based therapies, empowering them to make more informed treatment recommendations.

 

This policy shift would not legalize marijuana federally, but it would acknowledge the legitimate medical use of marijuana and remove barriers that have hindered progress for decades. It would also send a powerful message that federal drug policy can evolve in response to the needs of the medical community.

We respectfully ask that your administration finalize the rescheduling of marijuana to Schedule III. This change would support physicians, empower patients, and enable critical research.
