Patient Stories: The Impact of Medical Cannabis and ACS

Maria

After months of grueling chemotherapy, fatigue, and persistent nausea, Maria, a 42-year-old mother of three, felt like she was losing the battle—not just against breast cancer, but against the emotional and physical toll of its treatment. Conventional anti-nausea medications provided little relief, and her appetite and mood deteriorated rapidly.

During a routine visit, her oncologist, who had been tracking emerging supportive care therapies, suggested incorporating medical cannabis into her treatment plan. With a carefully dosed and timed regimen of vaporized cannabis flower, Maria began to experience a notable improvement—her nausea subsided, she regained her appetite, and for the first time in weeks, she slept soundly. Most importantly, her renewed energy allowed her to reconnect with her family and maintain her strength through continued treatment.

Her physician is an ACS member and has completed several levels of ACS CME.  Maria credits her physician’s knowledge of cannabinoid medicine with helping her not only endure chemotherapy but reclaim a sense of hope and quality of life.

Lily

At just five years old, Lily had already endured hundreds of seizures each week due to intractable epilepsy, unresponsive to even the most exhaustive combination of antiepileptic medications. Her parents were exhausted and desperate when they met a pediatric neurologist who was not only compassionate but, as an ACS member, also well-versed in the emerging science of cannabinoid therapies.

After carefully reviewing Lily’s case and securing the proper authorizations, the physician initiated treatment with a purified cannabidiol (CBD) medication. Within weeks, Lily’s seizures dropped dramatically—from daily clusters to only a few episodes per month.

As these episodes subsided, her development, once stalled by constant seizures, began to progress: she started speaking in full sentences and laughing freely for the first time. Her family describes the physician’s expertise in medical cannabis as life-changing, giving Lily a chance to thrive where conventional medicine had been insufficient.

Thomas

Eighty-year-old Thomas had been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years, and his once-gentle demeanor had been overtaken by frequent agitation, sleeplessness, and anxiety that led to occasional physical outbursts. Conventional medications were not able to provide relief nor behavioral control. His wife, overwhelmed and heartbroken, sought help from a cannabinoid specialist known for experience with dementia care.

After a thorough evaluation, this ACS member physician recommended a low-dose cannabinoid product tailored to Thomas’s needs. Within days of starting treatment, Thomas became noticeably calmer—his outbursts diminished, his sleep improved, and moments of lucidity and emotional connection returned.

The change was subtle but powerful: his wife was able to care for him at home with renewed hope, and Thomas experienced a greater sense of peace. Their physician’s informed approach to medical cannabis provided not just symptom relief, but a measure of dignity in the face of a devastating disease.
